Please Forgive Us, Richard Hauptmann was launched last night at Better Read Than Dead, Newtown. Really enjoyable evening with Ashley Kalagian Blunt as MC and actors Alison Albany & Dean Tuttle reading excerpts – thanks to all!
The book is a ‘retro’ collection of short stories – by ‘retro’ I mean a number of things. The cover font, the old-fashioned hand-sketched image and the choice of colour on the cover all say ‘retro’ in a warm, welcoming kinda way. Some of the stories have a genesis many years ago when I lived briefly in Wellington, NZ. Some contain references to bizarre and outdated concepts like fax machines, instant coffee and writing letters. Some are inspired by true crimes from the past. The book itself doesn’t comply with conventional short story collections – it contains a mixture of stories, verse, scripts and, I’m proud to say, 10 black & white photos of places, things & people that I love.
Leaving the venue just after 8pm – lo & behold! – there was a bright red pick up truck parked right out the front. How 1950’s can you get? Perfect photo opportunity! Especially since I was wearing my true crime colours of black, white & red.
Thank you and good night.
